Throughout the 70’s, Philadelphia and Boston were locked in a vicious
rivalry and that rivalry was rekindled on New Year's Day at Fenway Park.
While the game did see the Flyers lose, it was that game that set the
new tone of the rivalry when Dan Carcillo took Shawn Thornton to the ice
in the first Winter Classic fight. As everyone know, later that year,
the Flyers wrote themselves into the history books when they became just
the 4th major sports team to come back from down 3-0 in a series and
win it, while eventually falling to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.
In the 2011 playoffs, the Flyers were swept by the Bruins en route to
their Stanley Cup championship.
As if the Winter Classic at
Fenway wasn't enough, the NHL schedule people have given us another
reason to make a trip to Boston. The Flyers will face off with the
Bruins at 1pm on St. Patrick's Day in Beantown, which should make for
one heck of a weekend...
